In a service business, the job doesn’t end when the technician leaves. It ends when the work is recorded, the parts are accounted for and the invoice goes out. When those steps live in different tools, jobs get billed late, parts go missing and the office spends its day re-keying notes.

Odoo Field Service keeps the whole job in one record, from the request to the invoice. This guide follows a job through Odoo 19: creating the task, planning the route, recording the work on site and billing it.

Odoo Field Service at a Glance

  1. Jobs start from the sale or the ticket. Tasks are created manually, from a confirmed sales order, or from a Helpdesk ticket.
  2. The day’s route is on a map. The Map view pins each task, and Mapbox orders them into an itinerary by planned date.
  3. Worksheets capture the visit. Checklists, fields, photos and files, built as templates in Studio.
  4. Parts and time go on the invoice. Time and Material Invoicing adds the products used to the bill and updates stock.
  5. Check the plan impact. Worksheets install Studio, which Odoo says may change your price plan.

Creating Jobs Where the Work Starts

Field service tasks can be created three ways:

  • Manually, from Field Service › All Tasks.
  • From a sales order: confirming a quotation with a field service product creates the task automatically, linked from the order.
  • From a Helpdesk ticket, when the Helpdesk app is installed, so a customer request becomes a scheduled visit.

Creating jobs from the sale or the ticket means the customer, address and scope are already filled in, instead of being typed again by dispatch.

Planning the Day: Map View and Itineraries

The Map view pins every task location for the day. With the Mapbox integration, Odoo orders the tasks by planned date into an itinerary, which a technician can open in Google Maps from their current location, or navigate to one task at a time. Every customer on the route needs a valid address, which is a good reason to clean customer data before go-live.

Worksheets: Recording the Work on Site

Worksheets are what technicians fill in on site: instructions, to-do lists, checkboxes, blank fields, images, files and links. Templates are designed in Odoo Studio, so the same inspection or installation form is reused on every similar job, and a template can be chosen per task or set as the project default.

Odoo’s documentation warns that enabling Worksheets installs Studio, which may impact your price plan. Studio is part of Odoo’s Custom plan, so check the cost before you switch it on; our Odoo pricing guide explains the plans.

Billing the Job: Time and Materials

With Time and Material Invoicing turned on, technicians add the products they used to a task from a catalog, with plus and minus buttons for quantities. Odoo updates inventory in real time and adds the products to the invoice, so billing reflects what was actually used.

Where those parts come from, the van or the warehouse, matters too; our guide to connecting field service to inventory covers van stock and default warehouses. For more, see Odoo for field service companies.

Odoo Field Service: FAQ

How are field service tasks created in Odoo?

Manually in the Field Service app, automatically when a quotation with a field service product is confirmed, or from a Helpdesk ticket if the Helpdesk app is installed.

Can Odoo plan a technician’s route for the day?

The Map view pins the day’s task locations and, with the Mapbox integration, shows an itinerary ordered by planned date. Technicians can open the route in Google Maps or navigate to a single task. Each customer needs a valid address.

What are field service worksheets?

Worksheets are forms technicians fill in on site, with instructions, checklists, blank fields, images and files. Templates are built with Odoo Studio and can be set per task.

Do worksheets affect my Odoo plan?

They can. Odoo’s documentation notes that enabling Worksheets installs Studio, which may impact your price plan, because Studio is part of the Custom plan. Check this before switching them on.

How are parts used on a job invoiced?

With Time and Material Invoicing turned on, technicians add products to a task from a catalog. Inventory updates in real time and the products are added to the invoice.
