Warehouses and loading docks at dusk: the kind of place an upgrade has to work on day one.

Odoo 20 arrived in September 2026. Odoo’s own Odoo 20 release notes run to dozens of apps and more than fifty country localizations, which is hard to turn into a decision. If you run manufacturing, a warehouse or a field team on Odoo, you want to know three things: what changes on the floor, what it costs to move, and whether you need to move now.

This guide answers those for manufacturers, distributors and service companies. Everything about the release comes from Odoo’s release notes and its support policy, summarised in our own words and checked on October 12, 2026; the video is Odoo’s. Where we add judgement, we say so.

Odoo 20 at a Glance

  1. Odoo 20 was released in September 2026. Odoo plans standard support until September 2029, on Odoo Online, Odoo.sh and on-premise.
  2. Manufacturing gets practical changes. Continuous production, splitting manufacturing orders, as-soon-as-possible planning by default and clearer order costs.
  3. Inventory and purchasing get smarter. Suggested reorder levels, a single lot traceability report, better intercompany flows and vendor quality rates.
  4. The Field Service app is now part of Planning. Odoo has discontinued the app and moved its features into Planning, with a live technician map and travel fees.
  5. AI agents expand, and need credits. Agents can create and update records and connect through MCP, and all AI features require in-app purchase credits.

Watch: Meet Odoo 20’s Best Features

Odoo’s own release video is the quickest way to see the new interface and the main themes before you read the detail. It appears at the top of the release notes page.

Manufacturing and Shop Floor: Fewer Workarounds

The manufacturing changes in the notes are mostly about removing workarounds. The ones that matter most to a planner or plant manager:

  • Continuous production. Record produced quantities on work orders, and with the setting on the bill of materials, the next operation can start as soon as some quantity is ready.
  • Split an order in progress. Produce part of a manufacturing order now and the remainder later, without cancelling and recreating it.
  • Planned as soon as possible. Orders are scheduled as early as they can be by default, and their order in the list sets scheduling priority.
  • A clearer order cost. The manufacturing order cost shows a provisional figure while work is in progress and the real cost when it is done.
  • Lots and serials on close. Lot and serial numbers are always generated when a manufacturing order is closed, and the lot’s transfer button now shows the delivery lines for more precise recalls.
  • Flexible consumption by default. The setting is gone: every manufacturing order allows consumption that differs from the bill of materials. Check your process if you relied on strict consumption.
  • PLM comparisons. Compare bills of materials side by side, make version updates optional when applying an engineering change, and see all bill of materials changes, with cost comparisons, in one report.

If you are new to these apps, start with our guides to bills of materials and work orders and quality and maintenance, and see Odoo for manufacturers. Several of these apps are Enterprise only; Odoo’s editions page lists which.

Inventory, Barcode and Purchasing: Better Stock and Vendor Control

For distributors and warehouses, the notes bring several changes that cut manual checking:

  • Suggested reorder levels. Minimum and maximum stock levels for reordering rules are suggested from demand history, the days of coverage you want and how often you order.
  • One traceability report. Upstream and downstream lot and serial numbers appear together, with the final location highlighted.
  • Intercompany flows. Resupply one company from another by route, deliver a sales order from another company’s warehouse, and carry valuation costs across.
  • Landed costs per product. Add landed costs to individual products of a transfer. See our guide to landed costs for distributors.
  • Stock reporting. A stock aging report, and the inventory as it stood at a past date, with the filters kept.
  • Shipping. A new ShipStation connector for rates, labels and tracking, and improvements to Sendcloud pickup points.
  • Barcode. Generate lots and serials in bulk, get batch receipts suggested for a vendor with several expected receipts, and pre-encode a vendor’s package contents so scanning the package marks everything received. See barcode picking for auto parts.
  • Purchasing. Edit the expected arrival date while keeping the vendor’s original promise, so the on-time rate stays honest, view a vendor’s quality rate from quality checks, and set a default Incoterm per vendor.

See Odoo for distributors for how these fit together.

Service Companies: Field Service Moves Into Planning

The change that will surprise some teams: Odoo’s notes say the Field Service app has been discontinued and its features are now part of the Planning app. The notes list what Planning now covers for field work:

  • A live map of technician locations, and a map view of shift locations with technician availability.
  • Automatic planning that takes customer locations and shift priorities into account, with an ordered or an optimized route.
  • Invoicing distance-based or fixed travel fees, and travel times in the Gantt view through Mapbox.
  • Customer equipment and intervention history, including whether equipment is under a maintenance contract.
  • Customer ratings after an intervention, a confirmation email when a shift is published, and a website form for service requests.
  • Scanning product barcodes onto a shift, and sending employees their schedules by WhatsApp.

Our earlier guides to field service scheduling and van stock describe Odoo 19, where Field Service is its own app. Worksheet templates in Odoo 20 also use property fields instead of Studio fields, so test any custom worksheets before you upgrade.

Helpdesk gets smaller upgrades too: filtering for unanswered tickets, a reminder email before a ticket auto-closes and AI detection of similar tickets. See Odoo for field and tech services.

AI in Odoo 20: Agents, MCP and Credits

AI takes a large share of the release notes. In short, according to Odoo:

  • Agents do more. They can create and update records, work from uploaded files such as a PDF of instructions, run from automated or scheduled actions, and show live progress instead of a generic “thinking” message.
  • You can connect Odoo to other tools. Odoo supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect to your database.
  • Voice and files. Dictate requests to an agent and ask questions about a file while previewing it.
  • Skills replace topics. The collections of instructions and tools that define an agent’s behaviour are now called skills, and conversations are stored for up to 30 days.
  • Everything needs credits. All AI features need credits bought through in-app purchases.

Our advice, not Odoo’s: start with one agent on one task where a person reviews the result, measure the credits it uses, and then widen. For a worked example, see how AI voice reports in Odoo work, and Claude for Odoo.

Accounting and Sales: Smaller Changes That Save Time

Accounting has the longest list, much of it country-specific. The changes most teams will notice:

  • Bill line prediction. When you encode a bill, Odoo suggests the product, account, tax and analytic distribution from the bill history and the label.
  • Customer invoice reminders. Send follow-ups manually, or turn on automatic reminders in the Accounting settings.
  • Auto reconciliation on demand. Retrigger automatic bank reconciliation with a “Run Auto Reconciliation” option.
  • Better duplicate detection. Red warnings for invoices very likely to be duplicates, yellow for ones to investigate.
  • Cost of goods sold stays right. When a product’s cost changes after delivery, for example through a landed cost, the delivery value is updated retroactively.
  • Valuation without Inventory. Manage stock on hand and accounting valuation without the Inventory app.

In Sales, Odoo lists payment-based and manager commissions, pricelist rules for set periods or days of the week, editable margins on order lines and reusable quotation templates and sections. See Odoo accounting and Odoo Sales and CRM. Operating in another country? Odoo’s notes cover localizations for more than fifty, so read your country’s section.

Should You Upgrade to Odoo 20? A Decision Guide

Support dates decide the deadline; features decide the timing. Odoo gives every major version three years of standard support, then offers extended support for an additional fee, available only on Odoo.sh (for a limited number of versions) and on-premise. According to Odoo’s support page, standard support ends:

  • Odoo 17: September 2026 (already ended).
  • Odoo 18: September 2027 (planned).
  • Odoo 19: September 2028 (planned).
  • Odoo 20: September 2029 (planned).

Odoo also says you can upgrade from any version to any major version still under standard support. That gives three rules of thumb, which are our judgement:

  1. On Odoo 17 or older: plan the upgrade now. Standard support has ended or is ending. Choose the target version with your partner, schedule it away from year-end close, and budget for testing your customizations.
  2. On Odoo 18 or 19: upgrade when a change solves a real problem. You have time. Move when something in this guide pays for itself: continuous production, suggested reorder levels, the Planning features for technicians, or a localization update for your country.
  3. Heavily customized or on Field Service: test first. Run the upgrade on a copy with your real data. Look at custom worksheets, anything that depended on the Field Service app and processes that assumed strict consumption in manufacturing.

Still on QuickBooks or another system? You can go straight to the current version: see our QuickBooks to Odoo migration service, and our Odoo.sh deployment guide if you host there.

How an Odoo Upgrade Runs

A good upgrade is a project with clear steps, not a switch you flip:

  1. Assessment. Your version, apps, custom modules, integrations and reports, and which Odoo 20 changes affect them.
  2. Test upgrade on a copy. Your real data upgraded in a test environment, with a list of what broke or changed.
  3. Fix and adapt. Custom modules, reports and workflows updated, and processes adjusted where Odoo’s behaviour changed.
  4. User testing and training. The people who run production, the warehouse and the field team test their own work and learn what looks different.
  5. Cut-over. A planned go-live, with a rollback plan and your team on hand.
  6. Support after go-live. Fixes and tuning in the first weeks, then ongoing support.
