Odoo vs QuickBooks for Manufacturers: Which Fits Your Shop?
Machines, parts and paperwork all feed one cost. The question is whether your software sees them together.
Ask whether QuickBooks can run a manufacturing business and you will hear two confident answers, one yes and one no. Both are partly right. Intuit now lists manufacturing orders and bills of materials in some QuickBooks products, so “QuickBooks does not do manufacturing” is out of date. But what you need is not a feature on a list. It is a single record that connects what you bought, what you made, what it cost and what you can still ship.
This guide is for owners, general managers, operations and finance leaders at manufacturers that run on QuickBooks today. We checked every claim against Intuit’s own help article and Odoo’s documentation on October 13, 2026, and we say plainly when QuickBooks is still the right answer.
Odoo vs QuickBooks for Manufacturers at a Glance
- QuickBooks now covers part of manufacturing. Intuit lists manufacturing orders and bills of materials in Intuit Enterprise Suite, and assemblies in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.
- It has stated limits. Intuit says multilevel bills of materials with subassemblies are not supported in Intuit Enterprise Suite.
- Odoo is built around production. Manufacturing orders, work orders, work centers, estimated and real cost, and stock all share one record.
- Edition matters. In Odoo, Accounting, Quality and Barcode are Enterprise only, while Manufacturing, Inventory and Purchase are in both editions.
- The deciding question is cost visibility. Can your system show which of components, time or rates moved the cost of an order?
What Intuit and Odoo Each Say Their Software Does
Start with the facts, because most comparisons online repeat what was true some years ago.
QuickBooks Online. Intuit says you can use manufacturing orders to plan production, track progress and calculate costs for assembled goods. You define a bill of materials, see a shortage column when a component is short, and finalize the build to generate accounting entries. Intuit lists this as available in Intuit Enterprise Suite, and states that multilevel bills of materials with subassemblies are not supported there. Its article was updated on August 3, 2026.
QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. Intuit’s manufacturing page lists bill of materials cost tracking and assemblies management, and, in the Advanced Inventory module, tracking down to the bin or pallet and mobile barcode scanning. Automated builds and purchase orders appear under the Platinum and Diamond tiers.
Odoo. Manufacturing in Odoo works from bills of materials with subassemblies, manufacturing orders, and work orders that run at work centers with their own capacity, hourly cost and alternative work centers. Stock, purchasing and accounting sit in the same database.
| What you need | QuickBooks, per Intuit | Odoo, per Odoo documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Bills of materials | Supported in Intuit Enterprise Suite and in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise assemblies | Core part of Manufacturing, with subassemblies, kits and variants |
| Multilevel bills of materials | Intuit states subassemblies are not supported in Intuit Enterprise Suite; Desktop Enterprise lists assemblies | Documented, including subassemblies |
| Work centers and routings | Not listed in Intuit’s manufacturing orders article | Work centers with capacity, cost per hour, time efficiency and alternative work centers |
| Production planning | Manufacturing orders show progress and component shortages | Manufacturing orders and work orders, with Gantt planning and scheduling |
| Estimated and actual cost | Estimated cost from component prices; actual cost from the valuation method | MO Cost (estimated) and Real Cost, from components, work centers and employees |
| Work in progress | Not described in the pages we read | WIP journal entries, posted and reversed by hand, with Accounting |
| Quality checks and maintenance | Not listed in Intuit’s manufacturing pages | Quality (Enterprise) and Maintenance (both editions) |
| Warehouse and barcode | Desktop Enterprise Advanced Inventory: bin and pallet tracking, mobile barcode scanning | Inventory in both editions; Barcode is Enterprise |
Where a cell says “not listed”, we mean the Intuit pages we reviewed do not describe it, not that it is impossible. Confirm anything that matters to you with Intuit. Several Odoo apps in the table are Enterprise only, and Odoo’s editions page shows which.
How the Flow Connects From Materials to the Ledger
What a manufacturer gains from an integrated ERP is not any one feature. It is that one step feeds the next without anyone retyping it:
- A sales order creates demand. Confirmed orders feed replenishment and manufacturing, so production starts from real demand.
- Components are checked before work starts. The manufacturing order shows what is available and what must be bought, then purchasing acts on the shortage.
- Work orders record time and consumption. Operators log what they used and how long each operation took, at the work center that did it.
- Finished goods land in stock and cost follows. Receipts, delivery and invoicing update inventory and the books from the same transaction.
We walk through the first half of this in bills of materials and work orders in Odoo and the quality side in quality checks and maintenance.
Seeing the Real Cost of an Order
Profit in a shop depends on the gap between what an order should cost and what it did cost. Odoo’s documentation names both. The MO Cost is how much an order should cost based on its bill of materials, and the Real Cost is how much it actually cost. They differ when component quantities, operation durations or hourly rates differ from the plan, and Odoo builds the cost from components, work center operating cost and employee labor.
In that example, materials ran 15 percent over plan and production time 30 percent over. The useful part is knowing which of the two moved, because the fixes differ: a supplier price, a bill of materials that is wrong, a slow operation or a machine that needs maintenance. Odoo’s Production Analysis report shows component, employee and operation cost per unit, average duration and yield by product, so you can compare products and periods.
A test you can run on any system: pick last month’s most expensive order and ask which of components, time or rates made it so. If the answer needs a spreadsheet, the system is not holding the data that explains your margin.
One honest detail on accounting. Odoo lets you post and reverse work in progress journal entries from a manufacturing order, with the Accounting app, but the documentation says they are not tied to the order automatically and must be posted and reversed by hand. Decide who owns that step before go live. For stock that arrives with extra costs, see landed costs in Odoo.
When QuickBooks Is Still the Right Answer
Switching systems is a project with a cost, and not every shop needs it. QuickBooks is a sound choice when:
- Accounting is your main software need and production is simple, with single level assemblies.
- The manufacturing orders in Intuit Enterprise Suite or the assemblies in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise already cover how you build.
- A specialist production tool you are happy with feeds QuickBooks cleanly, and nobody retypes data between them.
- Your inventory is modest, in one location, and your counts agree with the books.
If that describes you, moving to a full ERP may add cost and complexity without paying you back. Say so to any partner who proposes it without asking how you build.
Signs It Is Time to Evaluate Odoo
In our experience the decision is rarely about a missing feature. It is about the work that grows around the software. Evaluate Odoo when several of these are true:
- Production lives in spreadsheets. Bills of materials, schedules or consumption are kept outside the system and updated by hand.
- You cannot explain a margin. You see expenses but cannot tie material use and time to a product or order.
- Shortages surprise you. Purchasing and production work from different views of what is coming.
- Counts never match. Warehouse staff keep reconciling the shelf to the system, or cannot trace a lot.
- You hit a structural limit. Multilevel bills of materials, several work centers, quality checks or more than one warehouse are now part of how you work.
- Reporting is an export. Someone assembles the weekly numbers from several tools.
Cost deserves a line. Compare the total cost of running your processes, not subscription prices: the tools you add to QuickBooks, the integrations that connect them, and the hours of manual work, against the implementation, data migration and training an ERP needs. We publish no prices here, and both Intuit and Odoo change their plans, so ask each vendor for a current quote on your own scope.
What We Have Seen on Odoo Manufacturing Projects
TeakDeals, an outdoor teak furniture manufacturer, runs on one Odoo Enterprise system covering Sales, Purchase, Inventory, Manufacturing and Shop Floor, PLM, Quality, Maintenance and Accounting. Each design has its own bill of materials and work orders, quality checks happen at the workstation, and material and labor costs roll up from the bills of materials and work orders. The published case study reports one source of truth for orders, stock, production status and costs.
On the migration side, Controlled Key Systems moved from QuickBooks Desktop to Odoo Enterprise. It is a wholesaler and service business, not a manufacturer, but the lessons carry over: the case study reports a validated migration of QuickBooks financial and inventory history with no disruption to operations.

Moving From QuickBooks to Odoo: What Manufacturers Need to Plan
A manufacturer’s migration is more than moving accounting records. The risk sits in products, units of measure, bills of materials and stock values, because an error there changes what you produce and what the books say you hold.
- Assess what you run today. Your QuickBooks product and version, chart of accounts, inventory, purchasing process and every spreadsheet that holds production data.
- Choose the Odoo apps you need. Only what your process requires, remembering which apps are Enterprise only.
- Clean and map master data. Products, variants, units of measure, bills of materials, work centers, warehouses and tax and cost settings.
- Decide what history comes across. Open orders and balances are usually essential. Years of old production orders often are not, so agree the scope early.
- Reconcile stock and money. Opening balances, inventory quantities and values, and open purchase and sales orders, against an agreed cutover date.
- Test a full production cycle. From a sales order to material shortage, production, delivery and invoice, with the people who will do the work.
QuickBooks Desktop data often needs a technical step to extract. See getting ODBC connectivity right, rebuilding custom reports, and our overview of why businesses migrate from QuickBooks to Odoo. A migration is measured by reconciled data and working processes, not by the number of records imported.

Odoo vs QuickBooks for Manufacturers: FAQ
Can QuickBooks handle manufacturing?
In part. Intuit says manufacturing orders in QuickBooks Online plan production, track progress, show component shortages and calculate costs for assembled goods, but lists them as available in Intuit Enterprise Suite and says multilevel bills of materials with subassemblies are not supported there. QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise lists assemblies and bill of materials cost tracking, with automated builds in its Platinum and Diamond tiers.
Does Odoo replace QuickBooks?
It can. Odoo includes accounting, inventory, purchasing and manufacturing in one system. Odoo Accounting is an Enterprise app, while Invoicing is in both editions, so the edition you choose decides how much of the finance side Odoo can take over.
Which Odoo manufacturing apps need Enterprise?
According to Odoo’s editions page, Manufacturing, Inventory, Purchase and Maintenance are in both Community and Enterprise. Accounting, Quality, PLM, Barcode and the Shop Floor, control panel and scheduling features are Enterprise only. Check the page before you plan, since editions change.
Can we keep QuickBooks and add Odoo for production?
Yes, it is possible, and some manufacturers do it. It needs a defined integration so that production, stock and cost data reach QuickBooks reliably. We usually compare that setup with moving the accounting too, because two systems mean two sets of records to reconcile.
What happens to our QuickBooks history in a migration?
It depends on the scope you agree. For Controlled Key Systems, a QuickBooks Desktop to Odoo Enterprise project, the published case study reports a validated migration of QuickBooks financial and inventory history with no disruption to operations. Open orders, bills of materials and balances are normally planned separately from historical transactions.
What changed for manufacturers in Odoo 20?
Odoo’s release notes list continuous production on work orders, splitting manufacturing orders that are in progress, a clearer manufacturing order cost and PLM comparisons of bills of materials, among other changes. Our Odoo 20 guide covers them and when to upgrade.
