Two things quietly eat a manufacturer’s margin: defects found too late and machines that stop without warning. Both are usually tracked on paper or in someone’s inbox, which means nobody can see the pattern until it is expensive.

Odoo handles them with two apps that work alongside Manufacturing: Quality, which builds inspections into the process, and Maintenance, which plans corrective and preventive work on equipment and work centers. This guide covers how each works in Odoo 19 and how to roll them out without slowing the floor down.

Odoo Quality and Maintenance at a Glance

  1. Control points create checks automatically. Tie them to an operation, a product or category, or a single work order step.
  2. Choose how often to check. Every time, randomly for a percentage of operations, or once per period.
  3. Five check types. Instructions, Take a Picture, Pass - Fail, Measure and Worksheet.
  4. Quality alerts capture problems. Raise them from a manufacturing order, an inventory transfer, the Shop Floor or the Quality app.
  5. Maintenance can block a work center. So production isn’t scheduled on a machine while it is being serviced.

Quality Control Points: Inspections Built Into the Process

A quality control point (QCP) creates quality checks at the moments you choose. Each QCP names the operations that trigger it, such as manufacturing, receipts or deliveries, and optionally the products or product categories it covers. For manufacturing, it can target one work order operation, so the check appears exactly at the assembly step rather than on the order as a whole.

The control frequency decides how often checks appear:

  • All: every time the control point’s conditions are met.
  • Randomly: for a set percentage of operations.
  • Periodically: once every set period of time.

Each check has a type: Instructions, Take a Picture, Pass - Fail, Measure (with a tolerance the value must fall within) or Worksheet. Measure checks are the ones that turn “looks fine” into data you can trend.

Quality Alerts: Making Problems Visible

When something is wrong, a quality alert notifies the quality team. Alerts can be raised from a manufacturing order or inventory transfer that has a quality check, from a work order card in Shop Floor, or directly in the Quality app. Raised from Shop Floor, the product and work center are filled in for you.

The value is in the pattern. When every defect is an alert tied to a product and a work center, recurring problems show up in reporting instead of in the next customer complaint.

Preventive and Corrective Maintenance in Odoo

Odoo Maintenance schedules corrective and preventive maintenance on equipment, to avoid breakdowns, blocked work centers and emergency repair costs. Requests are assigned to maintenance teams, whose members appear as technicians on the Maintenance Calendar.

  • Corrective requests fix equipment that is already broken.
  • Preventive requests are planned ahead to avoid breakdowns.
  • Equipment or work center: a request can be for a piece of equipment or for a whole work center.
  • Block Workcenter: on a work center request, it stops work orders and other maintenance being planned there while the work is done.

Users need access to the equipment to raise requests: either the Equipment Manager role, or being added as a follower of specific machines, which lets operators report problems on their own equipment without broader access.

Rolling It Out Without Slowing the Floor

  • Start with your costliest failures. Put control points where a defect is most expensive to find later, not on every step.
  • Prefer Measure over Pass - Fail where you can, so you collect values you can trend.
  • Use random checks for stable, high-volume operations instead of checking every unit.
  • Schedule preventive maintenance for the machines whose downtime stops a whole line, and block the work center while it runs.
  • Review alerts monthly by product and work center, and fix the cause, not just the part.

If you are earlier in the journey, start with Odoo manufacturing basics: quality checks attach to the operations and work centers set up there. See also our manufacturing industry page.

Odoo Quality and Maintenance: FAQ

What is a quality control point in Odoo?

A quality control point (QCP) tells Odoo to create quality checks automatically for chosen operations, such as manufacturing, receipts or deliveries, and optionally for specific products, product categories or a single work order operation.

How often does Odoo create quality checks?

Each control point has a control frequency: every time its conditions are met, randomly for a set percentage of operations, or periodically, once per set period of time.

What types of quality check does Odoo support?

Instructions, Take a Picture, Pass - Fail, Measure (where the value must fall within a tolerance) and Worksheet checks, which ask the employee to fill in an interactive form.

What is the difference between corrective and preventive maintenance in Odoo?

Corrective requests fix equipment that is already broken. Preventive requests are planned in advance to avoid breakdowns. Both are created as maintenance requests and can be scheduled on the Maintenance Calendar.

Can maintenance stop work being planned on a machine?

Yes. A maintenance request for a work center can tick Block Workcenter, and while the request is being performed no work orders or other maintenance can be planned in that work center.
