A recall call usually starts with one lot number and two urgent questions: which ingredient lots went into it, and which customers received it? On paper, answering them can take days. In a system that tracks lots through receiving, production and delivery, it takes minutes.

This guide shows how food producers set up Odoo 19 so a trace like that is routine: lot tracking on ingredients and finished goods, lots required at production, and the traceability report that ties it all together.

Recall-Ready Traceability in Odoo at a Glance

  1. Track lots on both sides. Ingredients on receipt and finished goods at production, so a trace can run in both directions.
  2. Odoo requires a lot at production. A lot-tracked product can’t be finished without one.
  3. One report shows the history. The Traceability smart button on a lot shows where it came from, where it was stored and who it went to.
  4. Print lots on delivery slips. So customers can match what they received to your recall notice.
  5. Practice before you need it. Run a mock recall on a real lot and time how long the trace takes.

Start With Lots on Ingredients and Finished Goods

A trace is only as complete as the lots behind it. Turn on Lots & Serial Numbers in Inventory settings and set Track Inventory to By Lots on both the ingredients you buy and the products you make. Assign supplier lots to ingredients on the receipt, so each one is linked to its delivery from the start.

If expiry matters as well, the same lots carry expiration dates and FEFO picking; see our guide to lot and expiry tracking in Odoo.

Lots Are Required When You Produce

When a lot-tracked product is manufactured, Odoo requires a lot to be assigned before the manufacturing order can be completed. Once the order is confirmed, a Lot/Serial Number field appears; the plus icon generates the next lot number, or you choose an existing one.

  • Ingredient lots are recorded as they are consumed on the manufacturing order.
  • The finished lot is assigned before the order is done, so it is traceable from the moment it enters stock.
  • By-products, if you produce them, can be listed on the bill of materials with the By-Products setting, so their quantities are recorded too.

Running a Trace With the Traceability Report

  1. Find the lot. Go to Inventory › Products › Lots/Serial Numbers, and group by product if needed.
  2. Open the Traceability report. Select the lot and click the Traceability smart button to see its full stock-move history.
  3. Read it both ways. Upstream to the receipts and ingredient lots, and downstream to the deliveries and customers that received it.
  4. Act on the result. Contact affected customers, and put any remaining stock of the lot on hold.

Run a mock recall once a quarter on a real lot. Timing the trace from start to customer list tells you whether your lot discipline on the floor is really as good as the system setup.

Where Traces Usually Break

  • Ingredients received without lots, so the upstream trace stops at the warehouse door.
  • Stock moved without being recorded, such as rework or transfers between sites.
  • Lots not printed on delivery slips, so customers can’t match what they received.
  • Old stock never given lots; fix it once with an inventory adjustment.

Odoo records the history a trace needs, but compliance also depends on your processes and the rules that apply to you, so confirm your obligations with your food safety advisor. For more, see Odoo for food and beverage producers.

Recall-Ready Traceability in Odoo: FAQ

How do I trace a lot in Odoo?

Open Inventory › Products › Lots/Serial Numbers, select the lot and click the Traceability smart button. The report shows the lot’s full stock-move history: where it came from, where it was stored and who it went to, and when.

Does Odoo force a lot number on finished goods?

Yes. When a product tracked by lots is manufactured, Odoo requires a lot to be assigned before the manufacturing order can be completed, so every finished batch is traceable from the moment it enters stock.

Can Odoo track by-products from production?

Yes. With the By-Products setting on, a bill of materials can list by-products and the operation that creates them, and Odoo records their quantity when the manufacturing order is done.

Do lot numbers show on what we send customers?

They can. The Display Lots & Serial Numbers on Delivery Slips setting prints lot numbers on delivery slips, which makes it easier to confirm what a customer received during a recall.

Is Odoo’s traceability enough for food safety compliance?

Odoo records the lot history you need for a trace, but compliance depends on your processes and the rules that apply to you. Confirm your obligations with your food safety advisor, and test a mock recall before you need a real one.
