What Is the Best ERP for Field Service Businesses in the US? An Odoo Guide

The headline What Is the Best ERP for Field Service Businesses in the US beside six steps, Request, Schedule, Dispatch, Complete, Invoice and Collect, with the Brazen Group and Odoo Ready Partner logos

Search for the best ERP for field service businesses and you will find ranked lists. Many are written by firms that implement the systems they rank, or by directories that earn from leads, so each list tends to favor what its author sells. We implement Odoo, so a ranking from us would be no more useful than the others.

This guide does something different. It sets out what a US field service company should test in any ERP, checks Odoo, NetSuite, Acumatica and Dynamics 365 Field Service against what each vendor’s own pages say, and states plainly where Odoo needs care. Brazen Group implements Odoo and Salesforce. Everything we say about the other three systems comes from their public documentation, checked on October 20, 2026, not from implementing them.

If you already know you are choosing Odoo, our guides to running a job from request to invoice and van stock, parts and billing cover day to day setup. They follow Odoo 19, and Odoo 20 moved Field Service into Planning, so check menu names against your version.

The Best ERP for US Field Service Businesses at a Glance

  1. There is no single best ERP. The right one runs your hardest jobs correctly, from the first call to the invoice, so test with your own jobs instead of a generic demo.
  2. Field service comes down to five checks. Scheduling and dispatch, mobile access with and without a signal, work orders and sign off, parts and truck stock, and invoicing from the finished job.
  3. Odoo 20 changed where field service lives. The Field Service app was merged into Planning, with a live map, routing modes and customer locations in Auto Plan. These features need Odoo Enterprise.
  4. Odoo needs care in three places. Offline mobile use is not described in its documentation, time billing follows the shift’s allocated time, and maps and routing depend on integrations.
  5. There is a US field service company to learn from. Controlled Key Systems replaced QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise and a separate field service tool with one Odoo Enterprise system.

Why There Is No Single Best ERP for US Field Service Businesses

Field service is not one business. A security installer, an HVAC contractor and an equipment repair shop run different jobs: some work is reactive, some is booked on a maintenance contract, and some is project work. Microsoft, for one, describes four service models in its overview: reactive break fix, preventive work on service agreements, predictive work triggered by connected devices, and project based work.

What changes the answer is less the size of your fleet than a few facts about your business: how you bill (time and materials, fixed price or contract), how many parts ride on each truck, how often technicians work without a signal, and whether your books already live in QuickBooks. A field service app next to QuickBooks can be enough for some companies. An ERP earns its place when the job, the parts, the invoice and the books need to be one record. They were not at Controlled Key Systems, where staff rekeyed the same customer and job data into two systems.

A more useful question is which ERP passes your own hardest jobs. These are the five checks we would run in any demo, in the order a job happens:

  • Scheduling and dispatch. Can a dispatcher see who is free, who has the skill and where each job is, and change the plan in a few clicks?
  • Mobile access. Can a technician see the job, record the work and get a signature on a phone, and what happens with no signal?
  • Work orders and sign off. Does the job carry the customer, a checklist and its warranty status, and does the customer get a report?
  • Parts and truck stock. Do parts used on site leave the right stock and land on the invoice?
  • Invoicing and contracts. Is the invoice built from the finished job, and are recurring maintenance visits billed on the contract?

Two more matter in the US, whatever the vendor: sales tax on parts and labor across states, counties and cities, and a QuickBooks starting point. We come back to both below.

Odoo, NetSuite, Acumatica and Dynamics 365 Field Service, Compared on What Their Own Pages Say

Each line below comes from the vendor’s own documentation or product page, checked on October 20, 2026. We give no scores and no ranking, and we left out products that are not ERPs, such as stand alone field service apps, and Salesforce Field Service, which belongs to a different platform and a different kind of buyer. “Not confirmed” means we did not find it on the pages we reviewed, not that it is missing.

Scheduling and dispatch

Odoo
Interventions are shifts in the Planning app, shown in a Gantt view where you can reassign, reschedule, resize, split and duplicate shifts without opening them. Auto Plan fills open shifts using roles, conflicts, time off and working hours, and Odoo 20 adds customer locations and shift priorities to it. Odoo documentation, Odoo 20 release notes.
NetSuite
A Schedule Board where tasks are dragged onto technicians to schedule or reassign them, with a map, filters for resources and tasks, and tasks color coded by priority. Tasks cannot be edited once they have started. NetSuite help, Schedule Board help.
Acumatica
A drag and drop calendar for scheduling appointments by priority, technician skills and availability, with the equipment and materials each service order needs. Acumatica.
Dynamics 365 Field Service
A schedule board that assigns work by location, availability, skill and priority, by drag and drop, with a semi automated assistant, or fully automated with the Resource Scheduling Optimization add on. Resources and routes show on a map. Microsoft Learn.

Mobile access and offline use

Odoo
Odoo recommends its progressive web app, installed from a browser, and also offers Android and iOS store apps. Technicians sign in to an intervention, add photos and products and fill in the worksheet, and with Geolocation on, the GPS position is logged at sign in and completion. The pages we reviewed do not describe offline use. Odoo mobile documentation, Field Service documentation.
NetSuite
FSM Mobile is a progressive web application. It supports offline use for some functions, but offline technicians cannot work with remote tabs and fields that send requests to NetSuite, and they must let changes sync before refreshing or unsynced data is lost. NetSuite help.
Acumatica
Technicians use mobile tools to access service and appointment information, track time, record expenses, capture signatures and issue inventory. Offline use is not confirmed on the pages we reviewed. Acumatica.
Dynamics 365 Field Service
Mobile apps for iOS, Android and Windows. Offline use needs an administrator to set up an offline profile, and some functions do not run offline, such as inventory validation. Microsoft Learn, Offline limitations.

Work orders, worksheets and customer sign off

Odoo
A shift holds the customer, the sales order and a worksheet template with property fields such as checklists and text fields. An under warranty flag sets the price of materials and services added from the shift to zero. On completion Odoo generates a customer report that the customer can sign. Interventions can start from a sales order or a Helpdesk ticket, and portal customers can follow them like a ticket. Odoo documentation, Helpdesk documentation.
NetSuite
Work is tracked as tasks, usually linked to a case, a customer and an asset. Technicians log inventory consumed, time and expenses against the task in FSM Mobile. NetSuite help, Operations help.
Acumatica
Service orders and appointments, with technicians recording time, expenses, materials used and customer signatures from the field. Acumatica.
Dynamics 365 Field Service
Work orders come from service cases, sales orders, service agreements and other sources, and hold a checklist of tasks, the parts to use and the labor to bill. Microsoft Learn.

Parts and truck stock

Odoo
Materials used are recorded on the shift and added to the sales order, and Odoo 20 lets technicians add products by scanning barcodes. Odoo’s 19.0 documentation describes a default warehouse for each user, which suits van stock, but the Odoo 20 Field Service page does not repeat it, so confirm it for your version. Odoo documentation, Odoo 20 release notes.
NetSuite
Inventory items, including serialized, lot numbered and bin managed items, appear on the Inventory tab in FSM Mobile, and consumables used are recorded against the task. NetSuite help.
Acumatica
Teams can allocate materials to service orders, track items used in the field and issue inventory from mobile tools. Acumatica.
Dynamics 365 Field Service
Inventory, purchasing and returns tools manage truck stock. Closing a work order reduces stock in the related warehouse or truck and records an installed part as a customer asset. Microsoft Learn.

Invoicing and service contracts

Odoo
An intervention is billed when it is linked to a sales order. Odoo can invoice materials, a service or the shift’s allocated time, with a rate for each employee, and Odoo 20 adds distance based or fixed travel fees. Odoo 20 can also show whether customer equipment is covered by a maintenance contract through Subscriptions. Odoo documentation, Odoo 20 release notes.
NetSuite
The help tells operations managers to monitor unbilled closed cases so jobs are invoiced as soon as possible. We did not confirm further billing detail on the pages we reviewed. NetSuite help.
Acumatica
Invoices can be created from estimates or actual service activity, and service, repair and recurring maintenance contracts are managed with renewals and scheduled billing. Acumatica.
Dynamics 365 Field Service
Closing a work order generates an invoice for the parts and labor used, and service agreements generate recurring work orders at set intervals. Microsoft Learn.

What this cannot show matters as much: price, implementation effort, partner quality, and how each system handles your particular rules. Features also depend on the edition or plan you buy, so ask every vendor to confirm in writing that what you need is included in what you are quoted. Dynamics 365 Field Service is its own application, so ask how its invoices and stock connect to your accounting system.

What Changed for Field Service in Odoo 20

If you are choosing now, you will be choosing Odoo 20, and the biggest change for field service is structural. Odoo’s release notes say the Field Service app “has been discontinued” and its features are “now integrated into the Planning app”. Interventions are now shifts in Planning, which you can create from the schedule, from a sales order or from a Helpdesk ticket. Among the field service changes in the release notes:

  • A live map of technician locations, and a map view of shift locations and technician availability.
  • Routing for the map view in an ordered mode, which follows your list of addresses, or an optimized mode, which finds the shortest path.
  • Auto Plan that takes customer locations into account, and shift priorities, so higher priority shifts are scheduled first.
  • Customer equipment and intervention history, including whether equipment is covered by a maintenance contract through Subscriptions.
  • Products added to a shift by scanning their barcodes.
  • Distance based or fixed travel time fees on the invoice.
  • A confirmation email to the customer when a shift is published, and customer ratings of interventions.
  • Schedules sent to employees by WhatsApp, and service requests collected through a website form.

Planning and Field Service are both Enterprise apps, according to Odoo’s editions page, so none of this is in the free Community edition.

Where Odoo Needs Care for a US Field Service Business

An honest guide says where its own product is weaker. These are the places to push hardest in a demo:

  • Offline work. Odoo’s mobile documentation recommends its progressive web app and lists store apps for Android and iOS, and neither it nor the Field Service page describes offline use. If your technicians work in basements, rural sites or buildings with poor signal, put one job in the demo with the phone in airplane mode. NetSuite and Dynamics 365 Field Service both document offline use, with limits.
  • Billing for time. Time based invoicing uses the shift’s allocated time, which Odoo updates when the technician signs in and completes the shift, and it needs Project and Timesheets with a billable project. Put a job that runs long in the demo and check what lands on the invoice.
  • Maps and routing. Itineraries need the Mapbox integration, directions open in Google Maps, and Geolocation depends on the browser being allowed to share its location. Check what the integration requires and that the routing you need is covered.
  • Auto Plan limits. Auto Plan assigns open shifts only to resources that have a role, and it does not work for employees on flexible hours. If you need a scheduler that optimizes a large fleet across a whole day, test Auto Plan with a real day of jobs.
  • Edition and add ons. Planning, Field Service, Helpdesk, Sign, Accounting, Barcode and Subscriptions are Enterprise only, as are the Android and iOS apps, while Sales, Inventory, Invoicing, Project and Timesheets are in both editions, according to the editions page.
  • Sales tax. Odoo connects to Avalara AvaTax for companies whose fiscal country is the United States, Canada or Brazil, and its documentation says excise tax is not supported.

Every system on this list has gaps like these, and the point is to find yours before you sign. Microsoft, for example, documents that its refreshed mobile experience does not currently support working offline.

Proof From a US Field Service Company: Controlled Key Systems

Controlled Key Systems is a California licensed lock and security equipment supplier and service provider in Southern California, with eight field service technicians. It ran on QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise and a separate legacy field service tool, with staff rekeying the same customer, job and inventory data by hand. Brazen Group replaced both with one Odoo Enterprise system. Requests from phone, email, walk in or a web portal now become Helpdesk tickets that flow through quotation, approval, work order, electronic signature, Avalara calculated tax, invoicing and payment. The published case study reports:

  • A validated migration of QuickBooks financial and inventory history with no disruption to operations.
  • One workflow from first contact to payment, with no rekeying.
  • Reports that did not exist under QuickBooks, including Work Order Closeout, which shows the time from job completion to invoice, Percentage of Hours, which compares estimated and actual technician hours, and Job Flow, which compares work orders entered and completed.

One case study is not a track record across every kind of field service business. It is the field service company we can name. Ask any partner, including us, for references from businesses like yours.

How to Run a Fair Field Service ERP Evaluation in Five Steps

  1. Write down your ten hardest jobs. Include an emergency same day call, a warranty job, a recurring maintenance visit, a job that needs a part from the truck, a job that runs past its estimate, a job that needs a customer signature, a job in a weak signal area, a job that takes several visits, a job with taxable parts and labor, and a customer who disputes the invoice.
  2. Shortlist two or three systems. Choose ones that fit your trade, your crew size and how you bill. Three good demos teach you more than ten.
  3. Run a scripted demo with a technician in the room. Give every vendor the same ten jobs and score each on the same sheet. Let a technician and a dispatcher hold the controls, not the salesperson, and run one job with the phone in airplane mode.
  4. Talk to references like you. Ask for field service companies with a similar trade and crew size, and ask what they would do differently.
  5. Compare total cost over several years. Count licenses, implementation, mobile apps, mapping and routing services, the tax engine, training and support. Ask for written quotes on the same scope.

Ask every vendor, including us, to show your hardest job running end to end. The vendors that agree are the ones to keep talking to.

We use the same method for distributors: see our guide to the best ERP for wholesale distributors in the US.

Moving From QuickBooks to Odoo: What a Field Service Company Should Plan

Many US service companies start on QuickBooks, and the move is more than transferring accounting records. Plan for customers and service locations, equipment and warranties, open jobs and quotes, items and parts stock balances, price lists and each customer’s tax settings. Decide early how much history to bring, and reconcile stock and money against a cutover date.

At Controlled Key Systems, years of QuickBooks history moved across using a dedicated QuickBooks Connector, custom migration scripts and a structured validation pass. QuickBooks Desktop data often needs a technical extraction step. See getting ODBC connectivity right, rebuilding custom reports and our overview of why businesses migrate from QuickBooks to Odoo.

Best ERP for Field Service Businesses in the US: FAQ

What is the best ERP for a field service business in the US?

There is no single best one. The right ERP depends on how you schedule and dispatch, how you bill, how many parts ride on your trucks, how often technicians work without a signal and whether your books already live in QuickBooks. Shortlist two or three systems that fit, then test each with your own hardest jobs. Odoo suits field service companies that want scheduling, work orders, parts, invoicing and accounting in one system and that run the Enterprise edition.

Is Odoo good for field service?

It can be. Odoo 20 schedules interventions in its Planning app with a Gantt view and Auto Plan, records work, photos and materials on the shift, and invoices from a linked sales order. Test offline use, billing for jobs that run long and your routing needs before you decide.

Does Odoo 20 still have a Field Service app?

Not as a separate app. Odoo’s release notes for version 20 say the Field Service app has been discontinued and its features integrated into the Planning app. Odoo’s editions page still lists Field Service as an Enterprise app, and lists Planning as Enterprise only.

Can Odoo technicians work offline?

Odoo’s mobile documentation and its Field Service page do not describe offline use, so we cannot confirm it from those pages. Ask any vendor, Odoo included, to run one job with the phone in airplane mode before you decide.

How does Odoo invoice field service jobs?

An intervention is billed when it is linked to a sales order. You can invoice materials added from the shift, a service on the sales order, or the shift’s allocated time, which needs the Project and Timesheets apps, and you can set a service with its own rate for each employee. Odoo 20 adds distance based and fixed travel fees.

Does Odoo handle US sales tax on service work?

Yes, through an integration with Avalara AvaTax for companies whose fiscal country is the United States, Canada or Brazil, with rates by state, county and city. Excise tax is not supported, and return filing and tax remittance are add ons.

Do we need Odoo Enterprise for field service?

Yes. According to Odoo’s editions page, Planning, Field Service, Helpdesk, Sign, Accounting and Barcode are Enterprise only, as are the Android and iOS apps, while Sales, Inventory, Invoicing, Project and Timesheets are in both editions.

How much does an ERP for a field service business cost?

It depends on users, apps, edition, integrations, data migration and support, and we do not publish prices. Ask each vendor for a written quote on the same scope and compare the total over several years, including mobile apps, mapping and routing services, the tax engine, training and ongoing support.

Can a field service company move from QuickBooks to Odoo?

Yes. Controlled Key Systems, a Southern California lock and security supplier with eight field service technicians, replaced QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise and a separate field service tool with one Odoo Enterprise system, and its published case study reports a validated migration of QuickBooks financial and inventory history with no disruption to operations.
